A visit to Pennsylvania wouldn’t be complete without a long stop at Gettysburg National Military Park.  Even non-history types will appreciate the chance to take a glimpse into a fragile time in our nation’s history and will come away with a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by those who helped shape our country.

On your next visit to Pennsylvania, take your rental car from Orthodox Auto Company to Gettysburg National Military Park and discover what makes this historically significant location so important.

The Battle of Gettysburg

One of the most famous and significant battles in the American Civil War, the Battle of Gettysburg was fought over the course of three days in July 1863.  Union forces led by Major General George Meade clashed with Confederate troops led by General Robert E. Lee, who finally conceded to a Union victory.  Much of the battle was fought on and around a wheat field, with notable skirmishes taking place on the surrounding knolls and hills.  From the Little Round Top viewpoint (as well as other sites), visitors can gaze onto the main battlefield and envision thousands of soldiers running toward each other in battle.

If you’re interested in Civil War reenactments, check the park website for specific dates so you can plan your visit to coincide.

The Visitor Center

To gain a better understanding of the events of the war, plan to spend some time in the visitor center.  Exhibits, interactive programs, artifacts, and multi-media presentations all add to the park experience.  The popular Cyclorama display depicts a segment of the battle known as Pickett’s Charge.  If you have a little more time, you can see even more photographs, manuscripts, and the like in the park’s Library and Research Center.  The gift shop offers books on Civil War history and many other interesting items.
