Philadelphia Museum of Art

Do you want your family’s trip to Philadelphia to be fun and educational? You may think that is not a possible combination but at the Philadelphia Museum of Art you can have both! Instead of spending the day in a hotel room gather your family up in your new cash car rental and head on over to Benjamin Franklin Parkway to spend the day immersing yourself in the artwork and activities the museum has to offer.

The building alone is a work of art, it was constructed of golden color stone in the 1920’s and displays architecture relative to ancient Greece. The exhibits here start from the Middle Ages and go to the Modern Period making your tour an easily constructed path. There are three other buildings you can explore if you enjoy the Main Building, these are the Perelman Building, the Rodin Museum and the Park Houses. Work is even underway to expand the museum by exploiting the underground area of the hill and the forecourt near the front steps made famous in the “Rocky” film.

The museum is arranged historically and features paintings mixed in with period rooms and decorative art. The illumination is provided by electric “skylights” and windows. A giant sculpture of Diana, a former wind vane from the original Madison Square Garden in New York City, dominates the grand stair hall.

Special exhibits that are on display this month are the Zaha Hadid: Form in Motion, Zoe Strauss: Ten Years, Van Gogh Up Close, 35mm: Photographs from the Collection, and Isamu Noguchi at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The museum offers private tours, collection tours, exhibition tours, spotlight talks and even children’s art classes! The museum offers several family activities such as Make Art at Home. Make Art At Home activities invite families to extend their Museum visit by having engaging, creative time together at home. Children can learn about masterpieces from the Museum’s vast collections and then create their own work of art in response.
