Philadelphia’s 9th Street Italian Market

If you’re looking for a unique place to visit during an upcoming trip to Philadelphia, then check out Philadelphia’s 9th Street Italian Market. The Italian Market is the oldest outdoor market in the country, which began as a marketplace in the late 19th century.

At the Italian Market, you’ll find numerous food shops and stands that serve a variety of food. There are the traditional Italian shops, as well as businesses serving Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Mexican cuisine.

Market Location

You can find the 9th Street Italian Market located on the southeast side of downtown Philadelphia in the Bella Vista neighborhood, which is easily accessible in a car rental from Orthodox Auto Company. The market runs along 9th Street between Fitzwater Street and Wharton Street, with its historical center running between Christian Street and Washington Avenue.

In October of 2007, the Italian Market was designated with a Pennsylvania State Historical Marker. The marker, reading “South 9th Street Curb Market,” sits at the northeast corner of 9th Street and Christian Street.

Market Hours

The Italian Market is open seven days a week, year-round. The hours of operation for each shop and food stand vary. Generally, the majority of the food stalls are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Sundays. It’s important to know that some of the stores are closed on Mondays.

When you visit the Italian Market, be sure to come hungry. If you’re craving a sandwich, the food stalls will provide you with many choices: an Italian Panini, a Vietnamese Bánh mì, a Mexican torta, or a Philly cheesesteak. Or you could sit down and enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants and cafés in the market area.

There are also many gourmet food stores offering specialty foods from around the world. You’ll find stores selling fresh cheese, meat, fruit, vegetables, and more.
