Visiting Adventure Aquarium

Adventure Aquarium has earned the accolade, “America’s most touchable aquarium.” After spending the day there, you’ll know why. Being the fifth largest aquarium in the country, it is home to an extensive collection of underwater creatures. Not only is it one of two aquariums in the country that have a hammerhead shark, but also the only aquarium in the world to exhibit hippos. This one-of-a-kind aquarium is just a short drive from Philadelphia and a must-see attraction when visiting the area.

The Adventure Aquarium Touchable Exhibits

Hammerheads and hippos probably aren’t the first animals that come to mind when you think “touchable”. But don’t worry, you won’t be petting any of these, but there are a number of other interactive tanks. Head to the Stingray Beach Club where you can pet and hand-feed gentle yet curious stingrays. Interactive Inlet is an area where your family is invited to touch the jellies, horseshoe crabs, lobsters, grass shrimp, and more.

Our Favorite Animal Exhibits

  • Penguin Island: After arriving to Adventure Aquarium in a car rental, this is often the first area people head to. Penguin Island is a 17,000-gallon tank that is home to 18 African penguins. Here you can choose to watch above water as they slide around their icy wonderland, or head down to the underwater viewing area to watch them dive and swim.
  • The Shark Tunnel: In the Shark Tunnel you will come face to face with dozens of sharks. You can marvel at their beauty as they glide over you, or take pictures as one swims by the glass for a cool underwater illusion.
  • Ocean Realm: The Ocean Realm exhibit is home to more sharks, stingrays and fish. It is also one of the only places in the country where you can get up close and personal with a 500-pound turtle.
  • Seal Shores: This aquatic adventure is not only fun, but also educational. Seal Shores is a 170,000-gallon tank that features seals of all different ages as they swim, play, feed, and perform tricks when instructed by their trainers. The daily show times vary, so be sure to ask when you arrive at the aquarium.

Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey is open 365 days a year from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the aquarium is $23.95 for adults and $19.95 for children ages two-12. Children two and under get in free.
